The next major revision of the global quality management standard, ISO 9001:2026, is currently in development and is expected to be published in September 2026. This version will replace the current ISO 9001:2015 standard after a likely three-year transition period, ending around late 2029.
Key Expected Changes
The 2026 revision is described as an "evolution, not a revolution," maintaining the existing high-level structure while addressing modern business challenges.
Sustainability & Climate Action: Formally integrates the 2024 climate amendment, requiring organizations to evaluate if climate change is a relevant issue for their quality management system (QMS).
Quality Culture & Ethics: Introduces explicit requirements for top management to promote a culture of quality and ethical behavior, moving these beyond implied expectations.
